Reception Spring Term Curriculum Newsletter 2008
 
A Happy New Year and welcome back to the Spring Term. Our main topic focus this term will be ‘Homes and Buildings’ and ‘People Who Help Us’. Through this topic and additional work, the children will be experiencing the following concepts and working towards the fulfilment of the ‘Early Learning Goals’.
 


Communication, Language and Literacy
Speaking and Listening
We will be discussing news, stories, poetry, listening to taped stories and playing an active role in circle time. We will also be learning a range of nursery rhymes and poems.
 
Reading and Phonics
ERR – We will be learning how to put sounds together to make words and how to split words up into sounds. We will be learning how to recognise 26 letter sounds and use this knowledge to begin to read words. The children will learn how to recognise high frequency words on sight and how to apply all these skills they are learning to read.
 
Writing
We will be focusing on correct letter formation and pencil control. The children will continue to develop their writing skills in a variety of fun and meaningful contexts. They will be encouraged to write letters and lists, make cards and create labels and captions.
 
 
 
Mathematical Development
In this term, the teaching of numeracy includes comparing, and ordering numbers. We will begin to relate addition to combining to groups of objects and subtraction to taking away. Children will begin to understand and use the vocabulary related to time, and begin to read the time to the hour on a clock. We will be comparing and ordering measures and using the language such as more or less, longer or shorter, heavier or lighter to compare two quantities.
 
Personal and Social Development
We will be talking about people who help us, and how to keep ourselves safe at school and in town. The children will be developing awareness of their own needs, views and feelings and be sensitive to the needs, views and feelings of others. They will learn about friendship and how to be a good friend.
 
We will learn about other cultures and celebrate the Chinese New Year in February. As Easter approaches we will be listening to stories and making special cards.
 
 
Knowledge and Understanding of World
The children will spend time thinking and talking about their homes, describing them, drawing them and painting them. We will talk about our town, the buildings, shops and other services and discuss our favourite things.
 
Weather permitting will be going on a walk to the Library, looking at buildings and other features on the way. The children will be encouraged to express opinions on natural and built environments and talk about features they like and dislike. We will make simple maps and plans of our journey to school and create a model town.
 
During the second half of the term the children will be developing their knowledge of the world outside. We will be learning about where different animals live, and how they build their homes. 
 
ICT
Children will be finding out about everyday uses of technology in the home and everyday life. Children will develop an awareness of ICT and how it is used to control mechanisms in computers, telephones, washing machines, microwaves, televisions, barcode scanners etc.
 
Physical Development
In Dance children will learn how to recognise and use a variety of body shapes, and develop ways of travelling and turning at different speeds and levels. Gymnastics this term will focus on balance and control of movements. Children will learn how to link movements together to and transfer their ideas to the apparatus. The main focus of Games is using a ball. Children will develop ways of throwing, catching, steering and dribbling a ball with confidence and increasing control.
 
Creative Development
The children will take part in planning and creating their own role-play corners based on a fire station, police station, hairdressers and caf?. We hope to have some exciting visitors from the town to help us with our themes!
 
We will experience a variety of topic-related activities in art, including using recycled materials to make buildings and vehicles. There will be lots of opportunities for painting, printing, weaving and collage making.
 
The children will be singing chants based on buildings, transport and homes. The children will be exploring instruments, learning their names, the sounds they make and how they are played.
