Reception Summer Term Curriculum Newsletter 2008
 
We hope you and your children all had a restful and enjoyable Easter Break. Our main topic focus this term will be ‘Growing’. Through this topic and additional work, the children will be experiencing the following concepts and working towards the fulfilment of the ‘Early Learning Goals’.
 

Communication, Language and Literacy

·        Speaking and Listening
We will be discussing news, stories, poetry and playing an active role in circle time. We will be using talk to interact with others, and taking turns in conversation.
 
·        Reading and Phonics
ERR – We will be learning how to put sounds together to make words and how to split words up into sounds. We are confidently learning all 26 phonemes and are now beginning to learn letter combinations. The children will learn how to recognise high frequency words on sight and how to apply all these skills when they are learning to read.
 
·        Writing
We will be focusing on correct letter formation and pencil control. The children will continue to develop their writing skills in a variety of fun and meaningful contexts. They will be encouraged to write letters and lists, make cards and create labels and captions.
 
 
Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy 
This term the teaching of numeracy includes:
·        Counting in ones, twos, fives and tens.
·        Reading and writing numerals up to 20.
·        Developing mathematical ideas and methods for solving problems involving counting and comparing in role-play or real life situations.
·        Using language such as ‘circle’ or ‘bigger’ to name and describe the shape and size of solids and flat shapes and everyday words to describe position, direction and movement.
·        We will be sorting coins including £1 and £2 coins, and using them in role-play to pay and give change.
 
Personal, Social and Emotional Development

This term we will be thinking and talking about baptism. The children will learn about christenings, they will be   developing an awareness of respect for their own cultures and beliefs and those of other people. Through role-play they will act out a christening and celebration party. 

 

 

 

 

In circle time, we will be talking and learning about basic safety measures and how to keep ourselves safe at school and at home.
 
Knowledge and Understanding of World
This term the children will be talking about all aspects of growing. We will be planting seeds, learning how to look after them and watching them grow. The children will be looking closely at change over time and asking questions about why things happen and how things work. To compliment this topic we will be going outing to Church Farm at Stow Bardolph, more details will follow.
 
To celebrate Paddington’s Birthday we will be taking part in ‘Bring Your Bear Week’ a fund-raising event to help ‘Action Medical Research’. The children will be invited to bring their special teddies to school to talk about and draw. Our role-play areas will be based on the favourite story of ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’, and we will learn lots of teddy songs and rhymes.
 
On Friday 20th June we will be holding a Teddy Bears Picnic. ‘All bears and parents’ will be very welcome!
 

Finally we will be thinking about the seaside and holidays. We will be finding out about sea creatures and looking closely at similarities, differences, patterns and change.

 

ICT

Children will be exploring programmable toys such as Roamer and Bee Bot, and finding out how to perform simple functions and commands.

 
Physical Development

In Dance children will learn how to recognise and use a variety of body shapes, and develop ways of travelling and turning at different speeds and levels. Gymnastics this term will focus on travelling, balance and control of movements. The children will be learning how to link movements together and transfer their ideas to the apparatus. The main focus of Games will be using bats and balls. The children will develop ways of controlling, throwing, and catching with confidence and increasing control.

PE sessions:

Rockets: Mondays, Wednesdays and Friday

Planets: Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays  

Stars: Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays
 
All children will need an out door PE kit – jogging top and bottoms, plimsolls or trainers, shorts and t-shirts for indoors.
 
For health and safety reasons please remove all jewellery on PE days.

Please ensure that all clothing is clearly named

 
Creative Development
The children will take part in planning and creating their own role-play corners based on favourite stories including Jack and the Bean Stalk and real life such as the home, visiting the garden centre and going to the shops and cafes.
 

We will experience a variety of topic-related activities in art, including using recycled materials to make gardens flowers and plants. There will be lots of opportunities for painting, colour mixing, printing, weaving and collage making. In music the children will be exploring how sounds can be changed, recognising repeated sounds and sound patterns.
