Spring Meadow Infant School
Year 2
            Spring Term 2008
A Happy New Year to you all. Our focus this term will be ‘Fire and Heat.”
Just to let you know, following her wedding Miss Myers is now Mrs Toth.
English
In Literacy Hour we shall continue our exploration of traditional stories and poems as well as factual writing. The children will be developing their writing skills with work on characterisation, settings, dialogue and use of adjectives. We shall also continue our emphasis on punctuation. ERR will take place three times a day for Mrs Toth and Mrs Webb’s group.
Please continue to help the children with their weekly spelling targets that come home in the pink exercise book.
 
Geography
We will increase the children’s awareness about different places both at home and abroad. There will be a world map outside class 2 and a UK map outside class 1. The children will be asked to bring in photographs of themselves in different places they have been, to be placed around the map. We shall also be studying a locality in Mexico called Tocuaro.
Numeracy
In numeracy this term we willbe covering place value, division, data handling, measuring,
weighing, telling the time, money, fractions and learning the 2, 5 and 10 times tables.
We shall be teaching the children mental arithmetic strategies, so they can handle sums such as 16 + 21 and solve mathematical problems in their heads. The children will also be recording how they solve mathematical problems, to help them improve on their skills.

Science
In the first half term we will learn about electricity. The children will be building and testing simple circuits. They will learn about batteries and mains electricity and which appliances use them.
In the second half of the term the children will learn about the things humans need to stay alive.
History
The children will be studying the “Great Fire of London”. The will learn about the causes of the fire, why the fire spread and how it stopped. They will learn about the historical sources that tell us about the fire. For one day the children will dress up in costume of the time.
Art
Our main focus is on painting. We will be mixing hot colours. We shall be looking at works by famous painters such as Rousseau to inspire our own paintings in hot colours.
 Physical Education
Gymnastics: We shall be working on travelling, balancing and body shape.
Dance: The children will be interpreting moods and feelings in response to music.
Games: We are hoping to provide the children with professional netball coaching every two weeks out of three. On the third week they will develop their skills working with small apparatus. We shall finish the term with an inter class netball tournament.
Religious Education
We shall be learning about Jesus as a teacher and leader. The children will compare his life as a boy with that of their own today. We shall hear some of the stories Jesus told and think about what message he was teaching through them. I.C.T.word processing
In the computer suite we will be using the internet, to search for information. They will develop their word processing skills. They will use IT in data handling.
The children will also be using a variety of drawing packages.
Design and Technology
We shall be making a Mexican God’s Eye as part of our Geography studies.
We shall be baking jacket potatoes and discussing healthy fillings.
Music
Our focus will be on pitch and dynamics in music. We shall also learn about gestures and how they are used in music to give instructions. The children will also be listening to a variety of music by composers, both old and modern.
P.H.S.E.
In P.H.S.E. our focus is on keeping ourselves healthy and safe. We will be discussing medicines and why we take them. How we keep ourselves safe around medicines and substances at home and at school. The children will learn about alcohol and tobacco and why people use them
SATs
Another reminder that SATs take place throughout May. Please do not book a holiday during this month.
