Spring Meadow Infant School
 Year 2
Summer Term 2008
Welcome to the Summer term. Our focus this term will be on “Ourselves and Our Environment”.
This term the children will be undertaking end of Key Stage 1 tests (S.A.T.s). These will take place during this first half term. The children will be given an individual reading task with an unfamiliar book, spelling, maths and comprehension tests and two writing tasks. The teachers will assess and level the children’s science knowledge and investigation skills. Children who miss tests because of an absence will be tested when they return to school. We try to be low key about the tests and have found that the children enjoy doing them. You will receive your child’s results with their report.
In the second part of the term the children will undertake activities to prepare them for transfer to St. Mary’s Junior School. They will visit the school on the morning of July 9th, when they will spend time with their next teacher in their new classroom. We shall also be practising hard for our end of year production which is “The Pied Piper”.
English
In the literacy hour we shall be focusing on the books written by some well known authors. Poetry will focus on tongue twisters, riddles and nonsense verse. Our library and research skills will be developed further using non-fiction books. The writing of reports and the completion of tables using information gained from books, will extend these skills.
Maths
In numeracy we will be looking at patterns in numbers and the 2, 5 and
10 times tables (3 and 4 for Mrs Webb’s group.) We will be revisiting
measuring and weighing with standard measures, telling the time using analogue and digital clocks, data handling and the collection and recording of data in a
variety of graphs. We will also be looking at directional and rotation problems
using computers and the ‘Turtle’, 2D and 3D shapes and their properties.

Science
The children will be studying the ‘life processes’ and environments of a variety
of animals and plants. They will learn about themselves and study human variation. As part of our studies we will visit Wicken Fen. This will take place on Friday June 20th for classes 2 and 3 and on Monday June 23rd for class 1.

History
We shall be studying what it was like to live in the fens in the past. We are hoping to visit Ely museum and follow the Eel trail around Ely.

Geography

We will be working on a unit called “At the Seaside”. The children will be developing their geographical skills e.g. reading maps, comparing localities, identifying geographical features and looking at aerial photographs. They will be learning about seaside locations abroad. If you have been away over Easter please would you send in a photograph for our “Look where we have been” board.

Music

The children will select appropriate instruments and use them to accompany recorded music. A group composition using voices and music will be composed and recorded.

We shall listen to music from other cultures. We shall use the film “Fantasia” to study and interpret music.

The children will be learning songs for the end of year production of “The Pied Piper”.

Recorders will be on Monday as usual.

R.E.

We shall be studying the Muslim faith and how aspects of it feature in the daily life of a family. In the second half of the term we will be looking at the special books of a variety of faiths.

P.H.S.E

We shall be discussing how we keep ourselves safe in a variety of situations and what to do if we get into trouble.

I.C.T.

Time in the computer suite will be spent learning how to store information in databases and representing it in graph form. The children will also be

programming a ‘Turtle’ to move along routes on the computer and then transfer this skill to a floor robot.

Design and Technology
We will look at pictures about the environment and interpret them through wool winding around a card.
Art
As part of our science work about ourselves the children will paint portraits of each other. They will have to mix their own skin, hair, eyes and mouth tones. They will look at art from other cultures. We will study the artwork in the film Fantasia.
P.E.
Gym: we will work on sequencing
five linked actions with stillness at the beginning and end using large and small apparatus.
Games: we will be developing bat
and ball and team games skills. In the first half of the term we shall be practising our races ready for sports day which (weather willing) will take place on Wednesday June 4th at 9.30 am.
As this will take place outside children must have full P.E. kit (shorts, T shirt, plimsolls /trainers) which must be named. Children without the correct footwear will not be allowed to participate for safety reasons.

Thank you for your continued support with the children’s reading, spellings and homework. Please be aware that the timetable and reading time in school will be disrupted by SATs this half term, so books may not be changed as often as usual. Children can always get books from the Library to supplement their reading.
